ErP Versus EuP – Why confuse the Energy Efficiency Regulations?

There is a lot of speculation about which is the correct terminology for the Directives relating to the Environmental design of energy-using products. Some companies use EuP and others, including Eurofluid Ltd, use ErP.

In 2005, the European Union approved the new 2005/32/EC Directive relating to the Environmental design of energy-using products. For a while the directive was known as the EuP or Ecodesign Directive; the abbreviation EuP standing for “Energy-using Products”, meaning that it comprised of all products which used energy (except cars and public transport). On 20th November 2009, the Directive was replaced by the new 2009/125/EC Directive.

The most significant change from the 2005/32/EC Directive to the 2009/125/EC Directive is the expansion to include “Energy-related Products”. Accordingly, it is now normally shortened to the “ErP Directive”.

With all this information, it is clear to see that ErP is the correct terminology. For any company to say that they are EuP compliant is a mute point as that directive is outdated; ErP compliancy is all the matters.

It should be noted that within the pump market the ErP Directives apply to both glandless and glanded pumps. Manufacturers such as Smedegaard have invested substantial sums of money to ensure that the customer gets fully ErP compliant products. So rather than choosing any product claiming compliancy with an outdated EuP, make sure you look for the ErP complaint labeling.

Your ErP Compliant Choice is Eurofluid Ltd & Smedegaard Pumps.
